Oklahoma Foundation for Medical Quality Awarded URAC Health Utilization Management Reaccreditation

(Oklahoma City)—March 13, 2008—Oklahoma Foundation for Medical Quality (OFMQ), the state’s healthcare quality improvement organization (QIO), announced today it was awarded reaccreditation from URAC, a Washington D.C-based healthcare accrediting organization that establishes quality standards for the healthcare industry.  The Health Utilization Management Accreditation, effective March 1, provides assurance to patients, providers and regulators that OFMQ’s case review practices are equitable for all parties and follow clinically sound processes that respect patients’ and providers’ rights.  URAC standards protect providers and patients from inappropriate and substandard medical management practices.

“We are honored to be awarded this seal of quality from URAC,” said Jim Williams, OFMQ President and CEO.  “Our reaccreditation is a testament to the integrity and soundness of our operations as well as the high quality standards that we value and uphold at OFMQ.  We will continue to work closely with healthcare providers and patients to maximize every opportunity for improving quality of care,” he said.

“OFMQ should be commended for meeting strict quality standards,” said Charles Stellar, URAC Board Chair.  “It is critically important for healthcare organizations to make a commitment to quality and accountability.  URAC accreditation is a demonstration of that commitment.”

OFMQ’s case management services ensure Oklahomans receive the best possible health care.  Through the review process, licensed health professionals determine appropriateness of medical care and payment and ensure services meet recognized quality standards.  By providing educational opportunities to help providers improve the delivery of care to their patients and increasing avenues of communication between patient and provider, the process can lead to increased satisfaction for all parties.

“Every Oklahoman enrolled in Medicare or Medicaid can be affected by how this type of review is administered,” added Williams.
