As part of our quality improvement work with hospitals OFMQ is tasked by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) to assist Oklahoma hospital teams to reduce Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) infection and transmission rates, as measured by the NHSN/MDRO module, by 40 percent. During 2008 and 2009 we held our “Mastering MRSA and MDROs” collaborative, which was a partnership activity that operated under the guidance of an expert Steering Committee with representatives from:
- Oklahoma Foundation for Medical Quality
- Oklahoma Hospital Association
- Oklahoma State Department of Health
- VHA Hospitals –Oklahoma and Arkansas
Between our ongoing work with hospitals and the collaborative process we are helping participating hospitals develop surveillance standards and best practices, educating patients and providers and sharing best practice knowledge in order to ultimately decrease the rate of healthcare-acquired MRSA and MDRO infections and transmissions.
